Serpentine belts last longer at about five years or 50,000 miles. But they cost more to replace so there is a tradeoff there. It’s true for both types that you don’t want to be around when they break, so pay attention to their life span and plan accordingly.

Suspension dampers Look for an oil slick on the street or driveway where the car is parked. Many owners wash dirty engines with a high pressure hose using degreaser or warm water. If the engine is the only clean part of the vehicle this calls for more attention to what you can not see. Check if the engine is still cold (you would want to start a cold engine to detect starting problems).
Ideally, you would also want a rear-wheel drive car for autocross. RWD cars typically provide better control and handling in most cases. I know some enthusiasts out there will disagree with me, but that’s OK. On the other hand, I have used several front-wheel drive cars that run with the best of them.
